Organic Circuit
A small cooperative with great expectations!
L'Unione del Porto:
the Organic Circuit
The Cooperative achieved the important goal of becoming part of the Organic Circuit 20 years ago.
Organic productions are constantly increasingly across the world. The values of biodiversity, safeguarding natural resources, animal well-being, quality of life and sustainability are spreading also thanks to certification and control quality.
In Europe, importers of organic products from third countries have long experienced the severe obstacle of having to use North European ports for goods provisioning.
In 2004, to deal with this logistics problem, the Cooperative was admitted to the Consorzio dei Prodotti Biologici (Organic Products Consortium) control system for storage, customs clearance and forwarding of organic goods, including in lots and batches, with the purpose of transferring a consistent quantity of traffic towards Italian ports.
Thanks to achieving this certification, L’Unione del Porto has redirected some of this traffic to Genoa Port.
This has allowed for the creation of a goods reception and forwarding hub that transits within structures certified as according to EC Regulation 834/2007. Above all, this involves colonial goods, in particular coffee, produced in countries outside of the EEC.
This guarantees complete goods security for importers who, in turn, can convey them to consumers.
Those intending to obtain organic certification must respect EC Regulation 834/2007, that defines the system of production, processing, labelling control and certification within the European Union.
